The 4 Main Types of Collagen

Collagen is all the rage right now. And this is great to hear, considering the collagen we use (and lose) needs to be replenished.
What many fail to recognize, is that there are multiple collagen types – from multiple collagen sources – with each serving a variety of functions.
Here are the 4 most abundant and impactful, from a health and dietary intake perspective:
Type I Collagen
- Skin Health: It provides structure and strength to the skin, contributing to its elasticity, firmness, and overall appearance.
- Bone Strength: Type I collagen is a major component of bone tissue, contributing to bone density and strength.
- Tendon and Ligament Health: It is found in tendons and ligaments, helping to provide tensile strength and flexibility.
- Dental Health: Type I collagen is important for the integrity of teeth and gums.
- Wound Healing: It plays a key role in the formation of new tissue during the wound healing process.
Type II Collagen
- Joint Health: Type II collagen is a key component of cartilage, which helps maintain joint structure and function. It can support joint health and reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis.
- Cartilage Repair: It plays a role in the repair and regeneration of cartilage tissues, potentially aiding in the recovery from joint injuries.

Collagen Types I and III are more commonly seen in supplement form, and more easily acquired in the diet (for those eating plenty of fish). Type II Collagen, on the other hand, is rarely seen in supplement form, and more difficult to acquire in the diet (unless you’re eating a boatload of bone broth).
