Preformed Vitamin A - The “Animal-Based” Difference
Posted by PrimalRx Team on
Vitamin A comes in several forms, primarily categorized into two types:
- Preformed Vitamin A (Retinol and Retinyl Esters): Found in animal products like liver, fish, and dairy. This form is readily used by the body.
- Provitamin A Carotenoids: Found in plant foods, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens. The most common carotenoid is beta-carotene, which the body converts into retinol.
Both forms are effective, but retinol (from animal sources) is more immediately available to the body, whereas beta-carotene (from plant sources) must first be converted.
On average, the body converts about 12 micrograms of beta-carotene to 1 microgram of retinol, but this ratio can differ among individuals. With factors such as dietary fat intake, individual genetics, and overall nutrient status influencing how well this conversion occurs.
Similar to B12, stomach acid is also a critical factor for conversion. And unfortunately, many individuals are now dealing with low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) because of:
-
Aging: Acid production tends to decrease with age.
-
Chronic Stress: Prolonged stress can affect digestion and acid production.
-
Medications: Certain medications, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antacids, can lower acid levels.
-
Infections: Conditions like H. pylori infection can impact stomach acid production.
-
Nutritional Deficiencies: Deficiencies in zinc or B vitamins may affect acid production.
-
Autoimmune Conditions: Disorders like autoimmune atrophic gastritis can damage stomach cells that produce acid.
Our recommendation?
Skip the conversion struggles, and get the "active" form of Vitamin A (retinol) from our richest source - Liver!
The best part being, our real-food, additive-free, easy-swallow capsules can be taken anywhere and anytime....
